While our Mani Ratnam is busy filming Raavan having Abhi Ash in the back waters of Kerala, NRI industrialist Uru Patel’s ambitious project ‘Hanuman’ is making news in Hollywood market. Known for his movies like ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’ and ‘Message in a Bottle’, Louis Mendoki, shall direct this movie which has a whopping budget of $60 million. The film stars Keanu Reevs as Deity Ram while Shipa Shetty shall portray Sita. Rama’s younger brother, Laxman, will be played by Indian actor Aseem Merchant. Classy Kevin Costner will play the part of the demonic Ravana. As of yet, the coveted casting of Hanuman is under wraps and also the much awaited plot of the movie. The film’s modern setting will defy tradition by renaming the characters.

It is interesting to note that there is Ramayan in Bollywood as well with Raj Kumar Santoshi going in for his perception of the Mythological drama with Ajay and Kajol Devgan as Rama and Sita. There shall definitely be a lot of comparisons and criticisms when movies of the same genre and plots pitch against each other at the box office. And To make the competetion tougher Bobby Bedi also plans a take on the Ramayan. And how can the other Indian epic ‘Mahabharat’ take back seat, Bipasha Basu may soon appear as Draupadi in a film by Rituparno Ghosh.

Naomi Campbell set for Bollywood role

Supermodel Naomi Campbell takes part in the Mai Mumbai fashion show during the second day of the Lakme fashion week in Mumbai March 28, 2009. The charity show was organised to pay tribute to last year's Mumbai attack victims. [Agencies]

Naomi Campbell is set to star in a Bollywood movie.

The British supermodel wowed casting directors during her appearance at the Fashion For Relief fundraiser in Mumbai last week and is now planning to return to India to audition for her first major film role.

A source said: "Naomi had never modelled in India before but she loved every minute. "At the end of the show, two well-known Bollywood producers approached her and asked if she'd be interested in screen testing. "

Naomi was incredibly flattered and plans to come back to Mumbai for more talks whenever she next has a break in her schedule." Although Naomi may be keen to launch a movie career, she admits her previous ventures away from modelling have not been as successful.

The 38-year-old-beauty tried to become a pop star in 1995, but her album 'Baby Woman' flopped.

She said: "I must say that I am not a great singer. I gave it a try but it didn't really work. I had a song 'La-La-La Love Song' which had a video heavily influenced by India. "Even where Indian fashion is concerned, I love the clothes - the sari.

Also, Indian women are very pretty and they carry themselves very well."

Shahrukh and Salman in Karan Arjun sequel

Shahrukh and Salman in Karan Arjun sequel

In the recent past Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan have been known to be at logger heads with each other. It all started on Katrina Kaif's birthday bash last year and almost divided the Bollywood into two camps. But the news is that forgetting all their differences the two superstars have decided to bridge their gap and do a sequel of their superhit movie Karan Arjun.

Rakesh Roshan who had directed the 1995 blockbuster will be donning the producer's hat this time and is in lookout for a director to call the shots. Kajol who had played Shahrukh's love interest in the movie will be retained in the sequel while Katrina Kaif will be replacing Mamata Kulkarni and play the female lead to her real life beau Salman Khan.

The movie is expected to hit the floors this July after the two superstars take on each other at the Box Office on the same day. Shahrukh will be seen in his much delayed Dulha Mil Gaya while Salman will be seen in an action movie Wanted Dead And Alive. As they say no friendship or enmity is permanent when it comes to Bollywood!

Another bad week for Bollywood

Another bad week for Bollywood

Yet another weekend has passed by for Bollywood and it is clear that there would still be some more time required before industry as well as audiences would be smiling again. Three films released over the weekend gone by but none of them took an opening which could be termed as good, let alone be considered terrific! (On second thoughts, except for Raaz - The Mystery Continues, no other movie release this year has seen a terrific start with Dev D being only good to an extent)

Coming back to the three releases of the weekend, Aa Dekhen Zara, Ek - The Power Of One and Videsh - Heaven On Earth, each of them saw a diverse response from the audience. Both Aa Dekhen Zara and Ek - The Power Of One catered to their target audiences, belonging to multiplexes and single screens respectively. Still, even footfalls here weren't phenomenal which could lift the spirits of Bollywood by shining at the box office.

Let's talk about Aa Dekhen Zara first. The film was best publicized a lot and promised to get the best opening amongst the three releases. This is what exactly happened for this Neil Nitin Mukesh and Bipasha Basu starrer. However, the release was marred by the fact that not all multiplexes were playing it due to which this supernatural thriller did suffer quite a lot. In single screens, it took a poor opening while select multiplexes too saw less than 50% footfall mainly because a) audiences weren't hyped enough to watch the film and b) not everyone was aware that the film had actually released in some properties. Since the word of mouth has been average as well, it will be film's progress in week to follow which will decide it's fate.

Ek - The Power Of One had hardly any chances in the multiplexes and this was pretty much on display with a mere 10%-20% opening that this Bobby Deol and Nana Patekar starrer witnessed. As expected, the North belt as well as interiors were slightly better and for those looking for their regular dose of vintage masala offering, this action film did have something to offer. The film has held on well over the weekend in these circuits and since it has been sold at low prices, it may just manage to break even. Still, it is early days and just like Aa Dekhen Zara, the week days collections of Ek - The Power Of One would have to be closely monitored before a verdict is passed.

As for Videsh - Heaven On Earth, the film took a disastrous opening with such a low turnout that number of people in the auditorium could be counted on the finger tips. With less than 10% opening on Friday, this Preity Zinta starrer has been completely rejected by the audience. Terrible reviews and poor word of mouth has further ensured that this Deepa Mehta directed film will fail in 'apna desh' as well as 'videsh'. A pseudo intellectual movie with some weird direction and even weirder myths (surrounding a cobra), Videsh is a lost opportunity for Preity Zinta who came up with a good act but all in vain.

With last three releases of the month hardly managing to make much noise at theaters, one looks forward to a better weekend ahead with Akshay Kumar starrer 8x10 Tasveer being next in the pipeline.

Bollywood star Salman Khan woos voters for Congress

Bollywood star Salman Khan woos voters for Congress

Bollywood star Salman Khan spent his weekend wooing voters for Congress nominee Anu Tandon in Unnao, Tandon’s Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

The star, who is quite a rage with youngsters, drew fabulous crowds at each of the five Holi Milan functions, organised by Tandon to give a fillip to her political ambitions.

Despite being a first timer, Tandon has earned a lot of goodwill with the people in this largely rural and under-developed constituency, which lies sandwitched between Uttar Pradesh’s two leading citites - Lucknow and Kanpur.

Salman was here to boost Tandon’s electoral prospects. Tandon has a close association with the Mukesh Ambani empire where her husband Sandeep was holding a top position after quitting the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). Tandon has her roots in Unnao, where her father was an old established businesman.

Salman Khan told the crowd, “Anu Tandon was born here and then she went away to Mumbai after marriage. Today she has come back after 25 years to seek your support. I would like to appeal to you all to extend your support to her.”

Hopping in a private helicopter with Tandon, Salman sang, danced and swayed with the excited crowd at each of the scheduled gatherings. If that was not enough, Salman sought to emphasise, “Anu Tandon has plans to convert this tiny little Unnao into Mumbai. But I can assure you that if she has her way, she would transform the destiny of this town and build a Singapore here.”

He repeated his antics in each of the places - Safipur, Purva, Hasanganj, Bighapur and Bangarmau - assuring the crowds before bidding farewell that he would visit them again.
